You found the perfect software, but will it run on your computer? Compatibility is one of the most common reasons a purchase doesn’t work out, and it’s easy to avoid if you check a few things first.
This guide shows you how to find your system details on Windows and Mac, and how to match them to a product page in under two minutes.
1Why compatibility matters
Software is built for specific operating systems and versions. A program made for Windows won’t install on a Mac, and a newer program may not support an older version of Windows or macOS. If your system doesn’t meet the requirements, the software may not install, may run poorly, or may not activate at all.
Because delivered license keys are generally final, checking before you buy saves time and frustration.
2How to check your system
- Open Settings, then go to System and select About.
- Under Windows specifications, note your Edition and Version (for example, Windows 10 or Windows 11).
- Under Device specifications, note your processor, installed RAM, and system type (64-bit or 32-bit).
- Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner and choose About This Mac.
- Note your macOS version (for example, macOS Sonoma 14 or macOS Tahoe 26).
- Note your chip (Apple silicon, such as M1 or M2, or Intel) and your memory.
3What to look for on the product page
Every product page on our store lists the compatible operating systems. Compare these items against your system:
- Operating system and version: Is your exact version listed, such as Windows 10, Windows 11, or a specific macOS release?
- Platform: Windows only, Mac only, or both? Look for “For Windows” or “For Windows & Mac” at the top of the description.
- Processor and chip: Some Mac software is built for Apple silicon, Intel, or both. Check what the product page says.
- RAM and storage: Creative software such as music production and video editing often needs more memory and free disk space than office software.
- Other requirements: Internet connection for activation, a graphics card, or an audio interface for some music tools.
4Windows vs Mac: key differences
- Widest selection of software and hardware
- Many programs support multiple Windows versions
- Easy to upgrade parts like RAM, storage, and graphics cards
- Popular for audio, video, and creative work
- Software support often depends on your macOS version
- Check whether the product supports your chip type
5Common compatibility mistakes
- Buying the wrong platform: A Windows license won’t activate on a Mac, and the other way around.
- Ignoring the OS version: Your computer may be too old or too new for the software.
- Skipping hardware requirements: Low RAM or full storage can make software slow or stop it installing.
- Assuming one license works everywhere: Most licenses cover 1 computer and one platform. Check the product details.
